This week, Blue Light Minds had the pleasure of delivering a specialist presentation to Paramedic Science students at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS), focusing on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), brain functioning and how Blue Light Minds can help.
The session offered students an introduction to trauma’s impact on the brain, highlighting how repeated exposure to distressing incidents can affect mental wellbeing, memory processing, and emotional regulation. We also discussed key signs and symptoms of PTSD, barriers to seeking help within Emergency Services, and evidence-based approaches to treatment.
Alongside the clinical content, we introduced students to the work of Blue Light Minds, including our free psychological support service for Emergency workers, our Trauma-Focused therapy programmes, and our ongoing efforts to build resilience / breaking the stigma in those preparing to join the frontline.
It was a powerful and encouraging session, filled with meaningful conversations. We’re incredibly grateful to UWS for the opportunity to speak with the next generation of paramedics and to raise awareness of both the challenges and the importance of early mental health support in this line of work.
This is part of our wider commitment to prevention, education, and empowering those who serve with the tools to look after their own wellbeing.
